Mindfulness has been explained and described in various ways which attempt to bring the essence of what it is into a single definition.

”mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: onĀ purpose, in the present moment non-judgmentally to things as they are.”

Jon Kabat-Zinn. The originator of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.

This is of course necessary in order for us to have a starting point and begin to grasp this essence. Mindfulness is of course much more than any single definition can begin to show us and it is cultivated through diligent practice. It is where we start with our whole heart and mind with a quality of present moment awareness, out of which develops an ability to live with equanimity…..that is, living life in the moment without either a clinging to or avoiding good or bad experiences.

We live much of our lives on what can be described as automatic pilot, a state in which we are only partially awake and either focussing on the past or the future. When mindfulness is cultivated it has the power to bring us back to balance no matter how difficult an experience has been.
